REPORT: Lebanon’s Honorary Consul in Benin shot dead in Togo

Lebanon’s Honorary Consul in Benin Assaad Chaghouri was shot dead on Wednesday night in Togo.

The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in this regard in which it noted that Chaghouri was in Cotonou and on his way home to Togo when the murder took place.

The statement added that the Consul was in his car when gunmen on board five vehicles shot him dead.

The Ministry noted that an investigation is being launched to reveal the circumstances behind the murder, while preliminary information stated that the reason behind the incident appears to be related to that of theft.

Chaghouri is expected to be buried in his hometown, Miziara, North of Lebanon, on Sunday.

He served as Lebanon’s Honorary Consul in Benin since 1996.
