REPORT: FM Bassil meets with Barzani, says Lebanon, Iraq are facing same challenges
Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil met Monday with the President of Iraqi Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani, and discussed means of defending the diversity and pluralism in Iraq.

Bassil and Barzani agreed on the need to fight terrorism, which is posing a great threat on the Arab and International Communities, calling for cooperation between the countries in order to end the conflicts.

Earlier in the day, Minister Gebran Bassil said Lebanon and Iraq are facing the same challenges and hazards, hoping that a new Iraqi government will be formed the soonest possible.                

Bassil’s statements were made as he held a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Hussain al-Shahristani in Baghdad.        

“Islamic State militants will be defeated in Iraq,” Bassil said, but raised questions about the post-Islamic State era.        

Separately, Lebanon’s FM said the Christian community will face the threat of extermination in the whole region if Christians were wiped out from Iraq, calling on Iraqis to stay in their land.       

In turn, Shahristani called for a wide international support to fight terrorism and more humanitarian aid to help the displaced.
