Sources told LBCI on Thursday that ten Change and Reform bloc MPs submitted a draft proposal to amend the constitution to allow the president to be elected by the people as opposed to parliament.

In this regard, MP Ibrahim Kanaan explained that the procedure consists of two rounds; during the first, only the Christians cast their ballots, adding that the two candidates who receive the majority of the votes will be transferred to the second round where all the Lebanese voters will then proceed to elect the president.

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun, the undeclared presidential candidate of the March 8 camp, has already proposed that the Constitution be amended to allow the Lebanese people to directly elect the president.

Speaker Nabih Berri deferred on Tuesday (August 12) the session tasked to elect a new president until September 2 for lack of required quorum.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum after Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25 with rival political blocs still divided over a new leader.

Prior to last week's session, nine electoral sessions were held, but parliament has failed so far to elect a new head of state due to lack of quorum.
