REPORT: Rai visits Bekaa villages, offers condolences to families of executed Lebanese troops
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai toured on Sunday various Bekaa towns to offer his condolences to the families of Arsal abducted soldiers, who were executed by Islamist gunmen.

“We have to preserve coexistence and rise above all crimes and conspiracies,” Rai said from the house of Mohammed Hamiyeh in the village of Talia in the Bekaa, who was executed by the al-Qaeda-affiliate al-Nusra Front in September.

Rai stressed that he Lebanese people have to support to the military institution and the security apparatuses “that protect us and maintain our security.”

Rai then visited the town of Bazzaliyeh to offer condolences to the family of slain captive Ali al-Bazzal, who was executed in December by the al-Nusra Front.

“We are responsible for the blood of martyrs who have fallen on the altar of the homeland,” Rai noted.

He also expressed strong belief in the “Christian-Muslim unity and collaboration in order to form one Lebanese weave.”

From Btedei, Rai said during a funeral mass for slain Sobhi Fakhry and his wife that there is "no reconciliation without justice," urging the Jaafar family to surrender to authorities the murderers in order to make way for resolution.

Last month, a Lebanese man has succumbed to his wounds after his wife was killed and his son injured during clashes between the Lebanese Armed Forces and a number of gunmen west of Baalbek.

The gunmen were fleeing raid operations implemented by the Lebanese army in the Dar al-Wasaa area when they entered the Fakhri residence with the intent of taking their vehicle.     

Four captives have been executed so far, two by the al-Nusra Front and the others by the Islamic State group, and the jihadists have threatened to kill the rest.

IS and Nusra gunmen briefly overran the border town of Arsal in early August.

Sixteen Lebanese troops are still being held by al-Nusra, and nine by IS.
