REPORT: Education Minister Bou Saab calls for a “fair and balanced” pay scale
Education Minister Elias Bou Saab stressed on Monday the need to adopt a “fair and balanced” wage scale that goes in line with the Lebanese state’s funding ability.

“A meeting will be held with Speaker Nabih Berri on Wednesday,” Bou Saab said during a celebration marking teachers' Day at the UNESCO, adding “Berri is searching for swift solutions to the pay scale dossier”.

In turn, the head of the private school teachers association Nehme Mahfoud said “the Union Coordination Committee (UCC) embodies the Lebanese people’s outcry in the face of corruption and oppression”.

“The UCC will remain democratic and independent,” Mahfoud said during the UNESCO celebration.

“We won’t back down on our demand to pass the wage scale bill [at the Parliament],” Mahfoud said, asking Speaker Nabih Berri to refer the series of ranks and salaries, the soonest possible, to the Joint Parliamentary Committees for examination.

He added that some workers at Lebanese schools are now earning higher wages than professors.

The Union Coordinating Committee has held continuous strike, for over three years, calling on the authorities to pass the pay scale, which stipulates a wage hike. No concrete measures have been implemented thus far.
