REPORT: Bassil says Foreign Ministry received UAE’s decision to deport 70 Lebanese nationals

Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil confirmed the information obtained by LBCI on Thursday, claiming that the Emirati authorities deported 70 Lebanese nationals, giving them a 24 hour deadline.

In this regard, Bassil told Agence France Presse (AFP) that the Foreign Ministry was informed of the decision, stressing that he has not received any details concerning the motives behind this move.

This as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement that Minister Bassil had on Thursday informed Prime Minister Tammam Salam and the cabinet during its session of the incident.

He then held a phone call with Emirati Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, the ministry added.

The statement underlined that it has recently sought to “return the Lebanese-UAE ties to their best form.”

“This was translated in reappointing an Emirati ambassador to Lebanon and in launching a discussion over all consular, diplomatic and political disputes,” the ministry noted.

It also explained that “the Lebanese living in the UAE are fully integrated in the Emirati society and that they abide by the Emirati laws,” describing them as “an element of welfare and prosperity for this dear country.”

Earlier, ministerial source revealed that 63 of the Lebanese nationals included in the said decision are Shiites.
