REPORT: Interrogation of arrestees in Abra clashes deferred until September 15

The Permanent Military Tribunal postponed on Tuesday the interrogation session of arrestees who were detained on suspicion of involvement in the Abra incidents until the 15th of September.

The suspects were detained following clashes that erupted last year in Abra, south Lebanon, between the followers of radical Sunni cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir and the Lebanese army.

The Internal Security Forces’ General Directorate arrested on Saturday (August 15) fugitive cleric Ahmad Al-Assir, wanted for being involved in the deadly clashes that resulted in the deaths of 19 army troops.

Security officials said Assir was arrested at Beirut International Airport as he was attempting to flee the country in disguise, using a forged passport, adding that he attempted to flee towards Nigeria via Cairo.
