REPORT: Lebanon’s airspace risks closure for 3 days
Lebanon's air traffic is expected to witness disruptions during the next three days due to Russian "military exercises" scheduled to take place in the Mediterranean Sea.
 
Airport authorities received an official communication from the Russian navy requesting the country shut down its airspace in the interest of civil aviation safety as the exercises would affect planes arriving to and taking off from the airport.
 
However, Lebanon's national carrier Middle East Airlines said that it found new routes that will not be affected by the Russian naval actions and will start using them on Saturday.
 
MEA announced that all its flights will take off at their scheduled times on Saturday, and that some flights to the Gulf region and other Middle Eastern countries will take longer than expected due to the change of routes.
 
Air France also said that its Saturday flight scheduled from Beirut to Paris will fly 50 minutes earlier.
 
For his part, Transportation Minister Ghazi Zeaiter said that Lebanese authorities had "reservations about the Russian request" and were "studying it.”
