The impact of Syrian-Turkish tensions on residents of Turkish border towns

Tensions prevailing on the Turkish-Syrian border are weighing on the residents of the border town of Akakali who are living in a state of caution and distress despite the reassuring deployment of the Turkish army along the border.

“In the past two days, the security situation was good but we are in a very bad psychological condition; we could not sleep and we even mistook thunder for shelling”, Mustafa Berk, a Turkish citizen said

In turn, Hassan Akbara who lives in the town of Akakali, stated that he heard some far-distance shelling overnight, hoping that the town will not witness such incidents again.

In this regard, the town’s residents considered that the deployment of the army may prevent the recurrence of such offenses.

The latest tensions with Syria began Wednesday when a Syrian shell hit a home at a Turkish border town, killing two women and three children and sparked unprecedented artillery strikes by Turkey. For recent developments, click here.
