Introduction to the evening news 17-10-2012

The international envoy Akhdar Ibarhimi returned to Lebanon after 23 years, to discuss the Syrian file, not the Lebanese one and representing the United Nations, not the Arab Tripartite Committee, and he seemed to have succeeded in arranging the truce of Eid al-Adha which is coinciding on the 26th and the 27th of October.            

This truce has so far won the approval of both sides of the Syrian conflict as well as the approval of Turkey, Iran and the Arab League Secretary General. However, will this truce be a preparation for a new round of battles or a beginning of the road leading to a political operation?                

Meanwhile, the Vatican declared that the Pope Benedict XVI decided to make the Church play an important role in restoring peace in Syria by sending a delegation of the Vatican's top officials.                       

While Syria is soaking in a race between a truce, escalation or a beginning of a political operation, Lebanon seems to be engaged in a race between the escalation of the Union Coordinating Committee and the cabinet rushing to find sources to fund the pay scale.                        

This evening, the students await the decisions of the cabinet session: if the ministers find a solution for the scale, the students will have a normal school day tomorrow; however, if the funding was postponed, a general strike will be held, according to the head of the Private Schools Teachers Association.
