REPORT: Christian representation according to the Orthodox Gathering electoral law

According to the Orthodox gathering electoral law, Lebanon becomes one electoral district whereby each sect votes for its deputies on the basis of proportionality.           

In this context, the Future movement, the Head of the National Struggle Front MP Walid Jumblatt, Hezbollah and Amal Movement are the most affected by this law seemingly since the future movement will lose 11 Christian deputies, the NSF 5 deputies, and each of Amal Movement and Hezbollah 2 deputies.                            

According to this electoral law, deputies are equally divided between Christians and Muslims; each sect will have 64 MPs.       

Whereas in the 2009 elections, March14 forces got 71 deputies whiles March8 forces got only 57 deputies.               

If the Orthodox Gathering electoral law were adopted, Christians will vote as follows:                    

In Akkar: Christians will vote for 3 Orthodox candidates and another Maronite candidate; the majority remains to the Sunni sect, the Future Movement.            

In Tripoli: One Maronite and another Orthodox candidate; the Sunni votes which are about 70% will not affect the results in this district.                     

In Beirut: The Christian sect will vote for 5 deputies from the Future movement.        

In Alley: 3 of the Christians deputies will reach the parliament by the votes of the National Struggle Front and the Arabic Democratic Party.                                    

In the Chouf district: The votes of the Druze and Sunnis will affect the Christian representation                       

In Bekaa: Christians in Zahle represent 75% of the voters, but the Sunni and Shiite votes will affect the 5 Christian deputies.              

In Baalbek-Hermel: The Shiite votes of the Amal Movement and Hezbollah will affect the Christian candidates.                 

In West Bekaa-Rashaya: The Future movement will have a negative effect on the Christian candidates.                 

As for Marjayoun-Hasbaya: One Christian Catholic candidate and another Orthodox candidate will reach the parliament by the votes of the Shiite sect.             

It is worth noting that statistics show that 38.5% of the Lebanese voters are Christians while 61.5% are Muslims.
