Introduction to the evening news 20-01-2013

 
Three days ago, the Lebanese website 'Now Lebanon' revealed the story of the first civil marriage in Lebanon; a marriage which is still waiting for the Interior Minister Marwan Charbel to look into its legitimacy.       

Today, the Lebanese President Michel Sleiman appeared on Twitter, where he called for legitimizing the civil marriage contract which constitutes a step toward ending sectarianism and promoting coexistence.                                   

Sleiman's tweet which triggered many supporting reactions by young people who called for implementing the president’s position has put him in front 2 major responsibilities.                   

The first responsibility is urging the Interior Minister Marwan Charbel to sign the marriage contract of Kholoud Sukkariyah and Nidal Darwish as well as giving the chance to those who are not affiliated with a sect to sign their civil marital contract.                     

As for the second responsibility, it is manifested by approving an optional civil code for the personal status that gives the chance to all the Lebanese citizens to choose a civil marriage contract.                       

Without these mentioned steps, the president's tweet will become a slogan by the end of his presidential term.
