If you are in Sweden or Denmark, you are advised not to even try, as a frightening invasive species related to the piranha has been spotted in the Danish-Swedish strait of Øresund (known in English as The Sound, the strait that separates the Danish island Zealand from the southern Swedish province of Scania).
The pacu, a 7-inch-long fish with mouth full of powerful, crushing teeth, is native to the Amazon, but its presence in The Sound has not yet been explained.
According to a press release, some suggested that it may have escaped from the newly-established The Blue Planet Aquarium in Denmark, but officials stress that this theory is “impossible.”
Now it is up to experts to determine how the pacu arrived there, but in the meantime, animal experts in the region are warning the boldest of swimmers to keep their delicate body parts covered to avoid a horrible accident.
