As poverty strikes hard in Haiti, and the prices of imported food are very high for the families on a dollar per day, people, especially children, have been forced to eat cookies made of dirt.
Made of dirt, salt and water and known as “bon bon de terres”, these patties are a grim reminder of how poor this Caribbean nation is.
They are not sweet, they are hard to swallow and they add almost nothing in terms of nutrition, these cookies are sometimes the only thing some Haitians eat.
“It fills your stomach, our system is used to eat, we have no choice,” one Haitian said.
However, the Haitians buy the dirt by sacks from mountainous regions and are convinced that they are rich in minerals and vitamins.
