Press Digest for Monday February 17, 2014

The following are summaries of today's major stories published in the Arabic press. LBCI does not edit press digest articles for content, giving English-language readers insight into the various views expressed in newspapers across the Arab world.

Prime Minister Tammam Salam told As-Safir newspaper on Monday that the new cabinet aims at dealing with the Lebanese people's needs and daily issues.

He also noted that the current phase will be dedicated "for action and not for words."

According to the Daily, Salam concluded by saying that he will deploy efforts to reach consensus between the March 8 and March 14 camps over disputed issues.

Sources close to al-Joumhouria newspaper on Monday that the Ministry of Labor was set to be given to the Marada movement, however deliberations held between Lebanese leaders the day before the formation of the cabinet resulted in giving the said ministry to the Kataeb party.

The same sources added that the Marada movement leader MP Sleiman Fangieh agreed to cede the Ministry of Labor in order to overcome the obstacles that were facing the cabinet formation process.

The Daily concluded by saying that the latest rapprochement between the Kataeb and Marada is the result of the social and personal relation between MPs Sleiman Frangieh and Sami Gemayel.

Well informed sources told An-Nahar newspaper on Monday that Prime Minister Tammam Salam is seeking to draft a brief ministerial policy statement without "listing details and promises that the new cabinet cannot keep."

Same sources added that the ministerial  statement will focus on the main mission of the new cabinet, which resides in holding the presidential elections.

According to the Daily, the ministerial statement will also include the security and economic challenges ahead.

Speaker Nabih Berri said on Monday that the new cabinet formed by Prime Minister Tammam Salam is "the best possible government" amid the current circumstances in the country.

He also noted that the new cabinet is a pure political government which does not include any neutral figures.

Berri's comments were made to As-Safir newspaper in which he stressed that the main mission of the new cabinet is to hold the presidential elections, adding that he will deploy efforts to reach a common ground over a new electoral draft law for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
