  • Bouteflika shuns Gaddafi’s attempt to enter Libya
AL-Watan daily reported Wednesday night that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi had tried to negotiate his entry to Algeria through Ghadames city with the Algerian authorities, where he is currently staying with his family.

“Gaddafi tried to call Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who turned down his phone call”, Al-Watan quoted sources close to the Algerian president, adding that this was not Gaddafi’s first attempt to reach Bouteflika.

  • Mikati to represent Lebanon in Paris
Al-Hayat daily quoted sources close to the French President Thursday as saying that Lebanese PM Najib Mikati will represent Lebanon in the international conference on Libya called to convene today in Paris by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The daily also reported that Mikati’s participation in the conference will allow him to hold side talks on the Lebanese situation with senior French officials, among them Foreign Minister Alain Juppe.

  • Ousted Saleh willing to hold early elections
Al-Hayat daily reported Thursday that the ousted Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has been in Saudi Arabia for medical treatment since an assassination attempt in June, expressed willingness to hold early elections; however, members of the opposition said they wouldn't consider any political moves until Saleh hands power over to his vice president Abd al-Rab Mansur al-Hadi.

Reuters quoted Saleh as saying "We have committed to the previous initiatives including the Gulf initiative and the efforts and statement of the U.N. Security Council and to moving towards achieving ... as soon as possible arrangements to hold general and free and direct elections for the new president of the republic".
