EU seeks to look beyond Turkey protests
         
Germany and other European Union nations are sounding a conciliatory note to keep the prospect of talks with Turkey on EU membership alive despite the weeks of protests that have rocked the government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.                        

Germany blocked the next step in membership talks last week, but German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said ahead of Monday's EU foreign ministers meeting that "we should not let the dialogue be interrupted or weakened."                         

Countries including Sweden and Belgium concurred with the need to look beyond the current political strife and take the EU's long-term interests into account.               

Berlin's blocking of the decision to open a new chapter in the long-running accession negotiations was a blow to Erdogan's government, which already faces increasing international scrutiny over its crackdown.
