Explosion and fire in New York's Chinatown injures a dozen including firefighters

An explosion inside a building in New York's Chinatown on Thursday led to a fire and a partial collapse of the structure, injuring a dozen people, including firefighters.

Three of those injured were taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The other injured, including four firefighters, had less severe injuries which included burns.

An emergency call about the fire at the five-storey brick building, which has a bus company and other businesses on the first level and apartments above, came in around 12:45 p.m. (1645 GMT), the fire department said.

The explosion and fire shattered windows on the first three floors.

"We had minimum collapse but heavy fire in the first floor with extension to the second and third floor," said Robert Boyce, Assistant Chief of the New York City Fire Department.

Hector Martinez, who was sleeping in his apartment in an adjacent building, said the explosion woke him up.

"It was like a rumble, and the rumble woke me up from my bed and .... I wanted to see what it was. I looked out the window. I noticed there was a whole group of people out here yelling for me to get out the building, so I notified my neighbors, I knocked on doors," he said.

The fire was under control shortly after 1:30 p.m (1730 GMT). The cause of the fire has not been determined.
