Turkish crackdown on Kurdish rebels: New round of violence

Turkish police on Tuesday rounded up dozens of people in a nationwide crackdown on a Kurdish rebel group that is fighting for autonomy in the country's largely Kurdish southeast, state media said.

At least 65 people, including lawyers of the imprisoned Kurdish rebel chief Abdullah Ocalan, were detained in simultaneous raids in several cities, including the southeastern city of Diyarbakir as well as the western cities of Istanbul, Izmir and Bursa, state-run TRT television said.

TRT said the suspects have been taken into custody on suspicion of ties to the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK, which has escalated its attacks since the summer.     In the latest reported violence, the rebels killed a non commissioned officer and wounded a civilian in an attack in the southeastern town of Nusaybin in Mardin province on Monday, Gov. Turhan Ayvaz of Mardin province said Tuesday.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since the rebels took up arms in 1984.
