Nine Palestinians arrested following clashes with Israeli police

An Israeli spokesman said on Friday that Israeli police arrested nine Palestinians outside Jerusalem's Old City.

Palestinians reportedly threw stones at policemen in small-scale clashes following Friday prayers.

Similarly, Palestinian youths burned tires and pelted stones at police near the Al-Aqsa mosque.

Meanwhile, thousands of demonstrators in the Gaza Strip protested in a show of support for Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque.

Jerusalem witnesses regular clashes between Palestinians and police near the Al-Aqsa and Dome of the Rock mosques in the Old City.

The Al-Aqsa compound is a significant monument to both Muslims and Jews.

It is the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

Jews worship at the Western Wall, considered as the last remnant of the one supporting the Second Temple complex and considered Judaism's holiest site.

Jews are not allowed to pray inside the compound.
