EU imposes sanctions on Al Watan newspaper

The EU included Syrian newspaper, Al Watan, the only private political newspaper in Syria, on its newest blacklist. In its official newspaper, the EU said that Al Watan is participating in disinformation campaign and inciting violence against protesters.

The newspaper, founded in November 2006 by three businessmen, operates from Damascus’ duty free to circumvent the restrictions imposed on Syrian media outlets. It employs 120 people, including one director and 53 journalists.

It is noteworthy that this procedure did not influence the three official newspapers, Techrin, Al Baath and Al Thawra. The sanctions also reached Champress news website owned by journalist Ali Jammalu.
