Suspected Qaeda militants capture Yemen army base

Dozens of suspected al Qaeda militants captured a Yemeni army base on Monday in the south-east of the Arabian Peninsula country, a military official said.

The militants had taken some military personnel hostage at the base in the city of al-Mukalla, the official said.

Earlier, at least three Yemeni soldiers were killed and six others wounded when a group of suspected al Qaeda militants disguised as security personnel attacked an army base in the southeastern city of al-Mukalla, a military official said.

"Some of the attackers managed to infiltrate into the base," the official said. "They caused confusion because soldiers at the base thought they were being attacked by members of the Central Security apparatus."

Elsewhere, a Yemeni security official reported that armed men shot dead a police officer in the Yemeni city of Taez.

Commander Abdel Malek Saleh, who was driving late Sunday in the city center was shot by two masked gunmen on a motorbike.

Yemen is witnessing an increase in the number of attacks against members of the security forces in recent months, mainly in the country's lawless southern and eastern provinces, where jihadist groups are highly active.

Authorities have blamed al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula for a recent wave of shootings carried out using motorbikes.

The group, however, never claimed responsibility of such attacks.
