Photo captures the heartbreaking moment of an elephant bidding farewell to fallen companion

John Chaney, a contestant in the 2012 National Geographic Traveler photo contest, took a photograph in 2007 of a female elephant which guarded the body of her friend for hours, chasing off birds and predators.

She then wrapped her trunk around her fiend tusk to say goodbye, Chaney said.

The photo has lately resurfaced, reflecting the dangers encountered by African elephants, such as the international ivory trade and robbers who kill the elephants for their tusks.

Wildlife conservation groups estimate that some 35,000 elephants were killed in 2012.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently announced the donation of $80 million to stop elephant killing.
