EU awards top human rights award to Malala

European lawmakers have awarded their top human rights prize to Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt last year.

The European Parliament announced Thursday that 16-year-old Malala won the 50,000 euro ($65,000) Sakharov Award. US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden and a group of imprisoned Belarus dissidents were also in the running.

The prize is considered the Europe's top rights award. Previous winners include Nobel Peace Prize laureates Aung San Suu Kyi and Nelson Mandela.
