Karzai condemns terrorist explosions in Afghanistan

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the two explosions that killed 54 people and wounded more than 150 in Afghanistan during the commemoration of Ashura, a Shiite holy day.        

Speaking at a news conference after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, Karzai said the attack was unprecedented in scope and the first time ever that one has been carried out during a religious event.      

He said it was "the first time that on such an important religious day in Afghanistan terrorism of that horrible nature is taking place."     

For her part, Angela Merkel said that these incidents confirm the necessity to exert more efforts to guarantee security in Afghanistan.
