Tunisian rapper acquitted on appeal

A Tunisian rapper, known by the stage name of Weld El 15, has been acquitted of all charges related to songs considered as insulting to the Tunisian police.

His lawyer Ghazi Mrabet said that he will be freed on Thursday after having appealed a four-month jail term pronounced earlier this month.

Weld El 15 - whose real name is Ala Yacoubi - has been held in prison since being convicted on December 5.

The charges against him are related to songs performed at a concert in Hammamet, east of Tunis, last summer.
