Tunisia begins voting on its new constitution

Tunisia's Constitutional Assembly has begun voting on the nation's new constitution that has been some two years in the making.
     
The body began voting starting Friday on each of the 150 articles. It will also take a final vote on the entire document, which must pass with a two-thirds majority.
     
The constitution's final approval is expected by Jan. 14, the third anniversary of the overthrow of long-ruling dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. His ouster kicked off the region-wide Arab Spring revolutions.
     
The North African nation's new constitution is the product of long, tortuous negotiations between the dominant Islamist party and several secular opposition parties.
     
Of all the countries that went through an Arab Spring upheaval, Tunisia's transition appears to be the most on track to produce a democracy.
