Pakistan's ex-President Zardari appears in court

The lawyer of Pakistan's former President Asif Ali Zardari says his client has appeared before a court looking into corruption allegations against him.

Farooq H. Naik, says Zardari's appearance in court on Thursday was his first since he stepped down last September.

Zardari, who still heads the Pakistan People's Party, has not yet been charged.

The court had opened five graft cases against him before he became president. He enjoyed immunity from prosecution for the five years in office.

Thursday's case relates to the construction of a polo field during his late wife's premiership in the early 1990s. Benazir Bhutto died in a militant attack in 2007.

The hearing was quickly adjourned. Naik is requesting that his client be exempt from appearing at the next hearing on Jan. 18.
