Study suggests rats as big as sheep may soon evolve

A recent study conducted by scientists published Wednesday said that rats bigger than sheep may evolve.         

The scientists said the giant rodents could grow to 12-and-a-half stone, taking advantage of larger mammals that are becoming extinct.              

The scientists said that these giant rodents could be seen on isolated regions of the earth where rats introduced by humans are now the dominant species.      Dr Jan Zalasiewicz, from the University of Leicester, said these rats could grow to be at least as large as the capybara, the world's largest rodent.             

It is worth noting that the largest known rodent to walk the earth is the extinct Josephoartegasia monesi which lived three million years ago.            

The said creature was larger than a bull and weighed over a ton.                

Dr Jan Zalasiewicz added that animals have the ability to evolve, over time, into whatever designs that will enable them to survive and to produce offspring.       

Dr Zalasiewicz said there are 'rat islands' all across the world and once they are established they are "extraordinarily hard to eradicate."
