Rare wolf shot dead by coyote hunter in Iowa
An Iowa coyote hunter shot dead an animal February that turned out to be the first gray wolf spotted in the state since at least 1925, according to DNA testing.

The hunter, whose identity remained unknown, shot the female wolf near Fairbank in northwest Buchanan County when he took it for a similar-looking coyote.

It is noteworthy that it is legal to shoot coyote in Iowa, while hunting wolves is illegal as they are a protected species.
