President Maduro meets Palestinian counterpart Abbas

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro on Friday in the capital Caracas on his two-day visit to the South American country.

Similar to his predecessor Hugo Chavez, Maduro is an outspoken critic of Israel and supporter of Palestinian independence.

At the conclusion of their meeting, both governments signed an energy agreement during a news conference at the Miraflores Presidential Palace.

"This agreement will facilitate the delivery from Venezuela of diesel supply that Palestine and its economy need to be able to continue growing and become established. Petro-Palestine has been born, which is the alliance between PDVSA (state-controlled Venezuela oil company) and Palestine," Maduro said.

Abbas expressed his gratitude to the Venezuelan government for their help in providing diesel fuel.

"Thank you to Venezuela for supporting Palestine. Thank you to Venezuela, for their help and for breaking the monopoly of Israel on our economy," Abbas said.

During his meeting with Maduro, Abbas was expected to talk about negotiations in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Abbas is scheduled to visit Chavez's resting place.

Chavez was a close ally of the Palestinians during his 14 years in power.

Abbas' visit will end on Saturday.

The Palestinian authorities established formal diplomatic relations with Venezuela in April 2009 and opened a diplomatic mission in Caracas.
