Pentagon: US sees no movement in Russian troops near Ukraine

The United States continues to see no evidence that President Vladimir Putin has pulled Russian forces near Ukraine back to their bases, a senior U.S. military official said on Tuesday, a day after the Kremlin announced Putin had ordered the pullback.

"As of this morning, (we see) no evidence that Putin is withdrawing forces," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Russia's defense minister has told troops to return to their permanent bases after military exercises near the border with Ukraine, fulfilling an order from President Vladimir Putin, Interfax news agency reported on Tuesday.

The Defense Ministry said the troops, which were involved in military exercises in the regions of Rostov, Belgorod and Bryansk, were ordered to withdraw, according to the report.

A defense ministry spokesman declined immediate comment.

Moscow has massed tens of thousands of troops near the border regions where pro-Russian separatists have declared independent states, and Kiev and its Western allies fear they could be used to invade in support of the rebels.

Reactions:

Sunday's presidential election in Ukraine will deepen political divisions in the country if there is no end to hostilities and a "road map" to end the crisis is not implemented, a senior Russian official said on Tuesday.

Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin also expressed concern about military operations in the east of the country, a reference to efforts by Kiev to regain control of key buildings taken over by pro-Russian separatist rebels.
