The meeting comes a day after Hague held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Baghdad on Thursday (June 26).
Hague's visit follows US Secretary of State John Kerry, who promised “intense and sustained” US support for Iraq, but said the divided country would only survive if its leaders took urgent steps to bring it together.
Kerry also pressed Kurdish leaders to back the Iraqi government in its fight against a growing Islamist insurgency in western Iraq and to support the formation of a new national government in Baghdad.
Hague has recently ruled out any military involvement in Iraq by Britain, but he said a British “operational liaison and reconnaissance team” arrived in Baghdad at the weekend and that Britain would provide humanitarian assistance if needed.
He has said that as many as 400 British citizens may be fighting in Syria and that some may also be fighting in Iraq with The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). REUTERS
