Spanish royals visit Pope Francis on their first trip abroad
Pope Francis welcomed King Felipe VI of Spain and his wife, Letizia, at the Vatican on Monday, on the new royal couple's first trip abroad.

Spain's new king, Felipe VI, was sworn in on June 19, after his father Juan Carlos abdicated, in a low-key ceremony which monarchists hope will usher in a new era of popularity for the troubled royal household.

Felipe has promised "new times" for the monarchy, vowing to unify the country and carry out his duties.

Talks between Pope Francis and the Spanish royals lasted 40 minutes and they exchanged gifts. According to Italian media, the King invited the pontiff to visit Spain.
