North Korea leader Kim Jong Un observes military drills

North Korean state media on Saturday (July 5) released still photographs of its leader Kim Jong Un observing military drills simulating an island landing.

The photographs broadcast by the North's state-run television KRT showed Kim speaking to military officials while observing multiple rocket launchers firing and targets exploding.

KRT said the drill was simulating an island landing, conducted by the North's Army, Naval and Air Forces.

KRT also reported that Kim said the waters near the southwestern sea border were exposed to frequent threats by 'enemies' and warned if the enemies make a wrong choice, he would make them regret it bitterly.

The photographs were released a day after Chinese President Xi Jinping completed his visit to Seoul and his fifth meeting with the South Korean leader since they both took office. KRT did not specify when the photographs were taken.

The events in the South were expected to be closely watched in the North, which has test-fired short-range missiles and rockets from its east coast three times in the past week and threatened on Thursday (July 1) to continue doing so.

Xi and South Korea President Park Geun-hye, appeared briefly before reporters after joint talks and said they were firmly opposed to nuclear weapons on the Korean peninsula.

Xi made no mention of North Korea by name, a standard practice in Chinese diplomacy. Neither leader took questions.

Xi has yet to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the third generation of his family to rule the country.
