Abu Qatada says ISIL’s declaration of caliphate is “void”
Muslim cleric Abu Qatada, who is being tried on terror charges in Jordan and who was extradited from Britain last year, on charges of conspiring to commit acts of terrorism, said on Tuesday that the declaration of a caliphate by Sunni jihadists in Iraq and Syria is “void”.

In a 21-page document published on jihadist websites, Abu Qatada said the announcement of a caliphate by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is void and null since it was not approved by jihadists in other parts of the world.

Abu Qatada added that the group (ISIL) does not have the authority to rule all Muslims, emphasizing that their declaration applies to no-one but themselves.

On the 29th of June, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant which has been fighting in neighboring Syria and Iraq, proclaimed a "caliphate" headed by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who now calls himself Caliph Ibrahim.

Abu Qatada, who has repeatedly criticized ISIL, urged other Muslims against joining the Sunni jihadist group.
