Kuwait sends humanitarian aid to Iraq

A convoy of 50 trucks loaded with relief aid arrived in Iraq on Thursday (July 17), a gift from neighbouring Kuwait to the thousands of families forced out of their homes following attacks by Islamic militants on Iraq's second city of Mosul, now overrun by members of the Islamic State (IS), formerly known as ISIL.

The trucks, carrying mostly food and clothes, arrived in Basra and will travel to the holy Shi'ite cities of Kerbala and Najaf to where thousands of Shi'iteTurkmen fled, after leaving their homes in the mainly ethnic northern Turkmen city of Tal Afar.

Basra official Abdulameer al-Ghalibi said the aid was a gift from Kuwait.

"These 50 trucks of aid are presented by our brotherly people of Kuwait to the people of Iraq - displaced families and volunteers during their just war against Daish," he said, referring to the Islamic State.

"There are countries that send death through vehicles packed with explosives and attacks, and that interfere in our internal matters, but there are countries that send convoys filled with supplies, water, juice, biscuits, milk and all sorts of things, even clothes," he added

The aid is funded by Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and Kuwaiti businessmen.

More than 1,500,000 people fled their homes in Mosul to Arbil after IS attacked on June 9. Most of the displaced families are Shiite Turkmen from Tal Afar and Sinjar towns.

About 5,000 Shi'ite Turkmen have left Arbil city over the past four days, many travelling to Baghdad, Kerbala and Najaf.
