Lebanese terror suspect held in Thai jail without trial

A Lebanese man arrested on suspicion of planning a terror attack was due to appear before a Thai court on Tuesday after the discovery of a huge stash of    explosives that police assert were not intended for use in Thailand.                

Police are set to seek a court order to further detain the man named Atris Hussein, who was carrying a Swedish passport. Officials have said he is linked to the Shi'ite Islamist group Hezbollah.                

Police said further interrogation was needed concerning his role in a plot that has so far been shrouded in mystery.                

Metropolitan police spokesman Piya Uthayo said the police are now seeking to detain the suspect for four more days, which can be extended for up to 48 days.                
Hussein was arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport late on Thursday (January 12) and gave police an address in a Bangkok suburb where 4,380 kg of urea and 10 gallons of liquid ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound, were discovered.
