Clashes erupt during West Bank demonstrations

Clashes erupted in three cities in the occupied West Bank on Friday (August 22) during demonstrations held against Israel's prolonged military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

In the West Bank city of Hebron, hundreds of demonstrators marched after prayers in main street of the city waving Hamas flags and posters of Hamas militants.

They were met with Palestinian security forces and riot police. Demonstrators hurled rocks while police fired tear gas canisters and stun grenades.

In Bethlehem, dozens of Palestinian stone-hurling youths clashed with Israeli soldiers near the main checkpoint into the city. Soldiers fired tear gas canisters and sprayed protesters with "a foul smelling liquid used to disperse demonstrations."

In Ramallah, dozens marched on the main street of the city waving flags and posters of Hamas militants killed in Israeli air strikes in Gaza.

On Friday, Hamas-led gunmen executed 18 Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israel, a day after Israel killed three of Hamas's most senior military commanders, the highest-ranking militants to die in the six-week war.

Israel launched an offensive on July 8 with the stated aim of putting an end to cross-border rocket fire from Gaza.

Health officials in the small, densely populated enclave said the Palestinian death toll rose to 2,070 on Friday, mostly civilians.

Sixty-four Israeli soldiers and three civilians in Israel have also been killed in the conflict.

Attacks by Israeli artillery and air strikes have devastated many areas of Gaza, a densely populated enclave that is home to 1.8 million people.

The United Nations says at least 425,000 people have been displaced by the fighting.
