Israel's Netanyahu praises EU oil sanctions on Iran
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday praised a European Union decision to place sanctions on Iranian oil exports, but said it was unclear if the move could thwart Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

"I think this is a step in the right direction," Netanyahu said at a meeting of his Likud faction.

"For now, it is impossible to know what the result of these sanctions will be. Heavy and swift pressure is needed on Iran and the sanctions must be evaluated according to their results."

In turn, Deputy PM Dan Meridor earlier said that tightening sanctions and the stern rhetoric used by Europeans are two important measures because it sends a clear message to Iran that its nuclear program will not be tolerated.

Meridor stressed that Iran realizes that there’s an air of determination to stop Iran from resorting to nuclear weapons, adding that the Iranian regime is anxious about the sanctions that might bear successful fruits.
