Strong quake hits west China's Sichuan province

A strong earthquake struck a lightly populated, mountainous area of western China on Saturday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's preliminary magnitude was 5.8, with a depth of 9.8 kilometers (6.1 miles), capable of causing major damage under certain conditions. It struck about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the town of Kangding in Sichuan province at 4:55 p.m. local time (0855 GMT).

The area is roughly 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) southwest of Beijing.

China's seismological agency gave the initial magnitude as 6.3.

A duty officer at the Kangding county government, who gave his surname as Xia, said the quake lasted only a few seconds, and that there had been no aftershocks or reports of injuries or damage. The area is frequently struck by quakes, and Xia said strict construction standards require buildings to be able to withstand those of up to 8 in magnitude.

Wang Dan, a spokesman for the Kangding county government, said rescue teams had already been dispatched to the epicenter. He said the local electricity supply hadn't been knocked out, there were no disruptions to transport or communications, and there was no major damage to buildings in the town of Kangding.

Western China is regularly hit by temblors. Sichuan was struck by a magnitude-7.9 quake in May 2008 that left nearly 90,000 people dead.

Just to the south, in Yunnan province, 589 people were killed by a quake this past August. In 1970, a magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Yunnan killed at least 15,000 people, and a magnitude-7.1 quake there killed more than 1,400 in 1974.
