A marriage proposal ended with a smash in the Netherlands when a crane being used during the romantic affair collapsed onto the roof of a house leaving extensive damage, local media reported on Saturday (December 13).      

A Dutch man and his girlfriend were being lowered by a crane into her garden when it fell through one of the many roofs within a long row of houses in the town of IJsselstein.       

During emergency operations another crane attempted to lift the crashed crane from the roof but failed to do so, leaving it to crash for a second time in the same area of the roof, deepening the hole and worsening the damage.      

"I heard a very loud sound and thought of a glass container. My boyfriend said, you should look, and I opened the door and I saw that. At that time it wasn't that bad," an unidentified neighbor said.       

Rescue operations were carried out throughout the day, with the crane still lying on top of the damaged roof in the late evening, local media reported.       

The Mayor of IJsselstein, Marianne Kallen-Morren, said all safety measures were put into place to ensure the safety of the neighborhood.
         
"We have been busy the whole day with names. We are now working to make sure people get the right assistance, that they are safe and that they can feel safe. And that we make sure that we have arranged everything for people as good as we can," Kallen-Morren said.       

Dutch media reported the woman said 'yes' and she was said to be celebrating abroad with her fiancé.
