Arab League chief gives end of year news conference on Syrian situation
Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby expressed optimism on Sunday about an upcoming meeting between the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad and the Syrian opposition in Moscow next month.

Elaraby was speaking in Cairo during an Arab League end-of-the-year news conference.

He said he didn't know what the Syrian government's terms were but the fact that they had agreed to the talks could "lead to something tangible in the near future".

Russia's Foreign Ministry had said on Thursday that it hoped to host peace talks after January 20 between the Syrian government and its fractured opposition.

Russia is a staunch ally of Assad.

The Western-backed Syrian opposition has insisted that any negotiated settlement include the formation of a transitional governing body with full executive powers, a demand rejected by Assad's government.
