Two people missing and homes destroyed after fires sweep through South Australia

Two people are missing and dozens of homes have been destroyed after fires swept through parts of South Australia on Sunday (January 4), local media has reported.

Hundreds of fire-fighters from across Australia have been battling the blaze that swept through the Adelaide Hills for three days, and it may continue to burn for several more days, Australia media reported.

Many people had to flee their homes and are unsure of what remains.

"I just want to go home and stay there and defend it," said an unidentified resident.

"It's just, like a nightmare, obviously," said another resident.

Many roads have been closed and fire-fighters had to physically stop some home owners from saving their own properties for their own safety.

"They wouldn't let us come and save our house, unfortunately," said Lina Demchenko. "What have you lost, everything?," asked journalist Adam Hegarty.

"Everything," Demchenko replied.

A carer for orphaned animals, Jo Morris, was more concerned about the fire-fighters saving her kangaroos and wallabies than her home.

"When they turned up here I could see the house was well alight and I just said to them, let it go, save my animals, and we did," she said.

One fire-fighter managed to save a very thirsty koala that was found on the roadside.
