At least five killed, many hurt as popular streetcar derails in Rio de Janeiro
At least five people died and more than 30 others were injured after a streetcar popular with tourists derailed in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, Brazilian officials said.

A fire department official said three people died at the scene and two died at a hospital. It was not known if any foreigners were among the dead or injured.

Rio de Janeiro state transportation secretary, Julio Lopes, visited the scene of the crash and said the streetcar system would most likely stop running until an investigation could be carried to find out why the streetcar came off its tracks in the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.

The streetcar or “trolley” is a common tourist attraction in Rio, which will host the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016.
