Six soldiers escorting a monitor team were wounded on Wednesday in a
bomb explosion in Syria's Daraa. AFP reported on Wednesday
Head of the UN Monitor Team, Robert Mood was among the
targeted convoy, however was reported to have survived the attack.
Meanwhile, Syrian troops fired across the Lebanese border on Wednesday morning,
killing a 75-year-old woman and wounding her daughter, residents and a
doctor in the Lebanese town of al-Qaa said.
Halima Suleiman Karbi was shot in the head and her daughter, 33, was
shot in the stomach as they sat by a mosque in the rural mountainous
border region, residents said. Both were taken to hospital, where Karbi
died from her wounds, a doctor said.
Separately, The UN international envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan said that world powers share a "profound concern" that Syria is descending into civil war but have pledged to deploy 300 cease-fire monitors there by the end of the month.
He warned, however, that the world can't wait forever for the truce to work.
Annan said in Geneva that there has been "a spate of bombings that are really worrying" and that the U.N.'s cease-fire-monitoring mission "is the only remaining chance to stabilise the country."
"There is a profound concern that the country could otherwise descend into full civil war, and the implications of that are frightening," he said.
"We cannot allow that to happen."
Meanwhile, in the Syrian capital, Damascus, supplies from Germany and UN
vehicles arrived by plane to the city's international airport for the
UN Supervision Mission in Syria.
Separately, Gunfire and
explosions could be heard in Homs on Tuesday even as a large contingent of UN
observers made their way to the battered city to monitor international envoy
Kofi Annan's stuttering peace plan.
An amateur video showed plumes of
smoke rising in the distance after what appeared to be a substantial explosion.
Another video posted online by activists
on Tuesday showed what was said to be soldiers loyal to President Bashar Assad
detaining civilians and leading them
onto a military vehicle in the city of Douma.
Separately,
General Robert Mood’s spokesperson declared that Daraa explosion is an example of
the violence Syrians can do without.
France
on the other hand denounced the attack that targeted the UN observers in Syria.
In this matter, UN Secretary General
Ban Ki Moon said that the explosion that targeted the UN observer convoy and
wounded 6 soldiers could lead to reconsider the UN mission to Syria.
