Al Qaeda claims responsibility for Sunday's bloody attacks in Iraq

Jihadists' websites announced on Monday that Al Qaeda's affiliate in Iraq has claimed responsibility for scores of Sunday's bloody attacks across the country targeting military and civilian sites, killing around 90 persons and injuring 400 others.

The sources said that "the operations are a response to the torturing campaign and the organized killing against the Sunnites detained in the Safavid prisons".

Safavid is a reference to the ruling dynasty of Shiite Iran from the 16th to 18th centuries which at times also controlled parts of modern-day Iraq.

Since Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki came to office, Iraq has edged closer to Iran which is influential over several Iraqi Shiite parties.

Al Qaeda in Iraq and other Sunni Islamists are hostile to Iraq's Shiite-led government which many minority Sunnis feel has sidelined them from power-sharing agreements since the fall of Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein.
