Obama calls Libya, Egypt following attacks on missions

AFP reported that US President Barack Obama called the leaders of Egypt and Libya to discuss security cooperation following the violence in Cairo and Benghazi, according to the White House.     

Obama reportedly urged Egypt to uphold its pledges to protect US diplomats and called on Libya to work with US authorities to bring those behind the deadly attack on the US consulate, which killed the US ambassador, to justice.          

This comes in the wake of the attack of militants on the US consulate in Benghazi, that left the US ambassador and three other Americans dead. Earlier a mob had attacked the US embassy in Cairo, scaling its walls and tearing down an American flag.      

"The President called Egyptian President (Mohamed) Morsi today to review the strategic partnership between the United States and Egypt," the White House said, referring to a phone call on Wednesday.           

In an interview with Telemundo earlier Wednesday, Obama said the United States does not currently view Egypt as an ally or an enemy, but that if Cairo does not adequately protect the embassy it would be "a real big problem."            

In parallel, the US sent 2 Navy ships to the Libyan coast coinciding with  the elections of the Libyan National Congress on Wednesday evening. Mustafa Abu Hakor as the new president of the transitional government, which is expected to focus on the restoration of security.                 

Abu Hakor received 96 votes, with two votes setting him ahead of leader of the Liberal Alliance Mahmoud Jibril.                 

In addition, YouTube announced that the video has been banned access from countries such  as Libya and Egypt, which has led to acts of violence against Americans and on the streets.
