SKorea conducts large-scale maneuvers in preparation for North provocations

At a time of heightened cross-border tensions between the two Koreas, SKorea launched on Thursday an annual large-scale military exercise.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the military maneuvers will involve 240,000 army personnel, along with police officers.

This year's exercise has been enlarged "to prepare for possible provocations by North Korea and an all-out war, considering the recent security situations," the JCS said.

North Korea threatened a few days ago to open fire on South Korea if it allows activists to go ahead with plans to drop anti-North leaflets on its territory, its most strident warning against its long-time foe in months.

North Korea shelled a South Korean island almost two years ago, causing civilian deaths. It was also widely blamed for sinking a South Korean navy ship, although it denied responsibility.

The two Koreas are still technically at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended in merely a truce.
