23 Bahraini medics sentenced to 3-month jail over protests

Bahraini prosecution reported on Wednesday that 23 medics were sentenced to 3 months in jail or payment of 200 dinars ($530) each for "taking part in anti-regime unauthorized protests last year."

The medics have however the right to appeal.

The doctors, who are all Shiites, say they were victimized for treating protesters

The Shiite opposition wants a constitutional monarchy and a more equitable political system that would allow them to have greater representation, ending decades-old discrimination against them in jobs including the army and security forces.

The Al Khalifas, the ruling family, fear the Shiites want to topple them.
